Welfare Reform and Public Assistance Voter Registrations: A Reply to the Critics

A previous Heritage Foundation report found that declining welfare caseloads contributed substantially to the decline in public assistance voter registrations from 1996 to 2006. Despite recent criticisms by R. Michael Alvarez and Jonathan Nagler, this finding still holds. Members of Congress, policymakers, and the media should not dismiss the major role that welfare reform and decreased welfare participation have played in reducing voter registrations at state public assistance offices.

ENDA and the Path to Same-Sex Marriage

A significant body of evidence suggests that sexual orientation nondiscrimination laws like the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) can function as important incremental steps toward same-sex marriage. This evidence, which shows how effective a step-by-step strategy can be for redefining marriage, provides substantial cause for individuals who support marriage as the union of husband and wife to be concerned about local, state, and federal nondiscrimination laws like ENDA.

Obama to Spend $10.3 Trillion on Welfare: Uncovering the Full Cost of Means-Tested Welfare or Aid to the Poor

Means-tested welfare spending nearly rivals the combined cost of Social Security and Medicare, and President Obama's response has been to continue the permanent enlargement of the system. According to the President's budget plans, means-tested welfare is likely to equal or exceed $10.3 trillion over the next decade. Much of this spending will be financed by massive government deficits, placing larger and larger financial burdens on future generations.

A Free and Just Society

The institutions of civil society are important because they are neither created nor controlled by the state. While public funding requires accountability and some services require training, skills, and a professional approach, this is entirely within the capability of the voluntary sector. Government should not be allowed to seduce community groups into becoming its mouthpiece or an extension of itself.

More Than Hope: Policy for a Free and Just Society

Successful solutions to social breakdown are those that engage personal responsibility and mutual responsibility, not through government redistribution, but through relationships. That is why we should look first to the vast resources of the family, religious congregations, community groups, and other support networks to tackle social breakdown and cultivate the conditions in which these civil society institutions can flourish.
